The Daily News

Daily News

Founded in 1919, the Daily News was one of America’s first successful tabloid newspapers. The paper attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime, scandal and violence, lurid photographs, and comics and other entertainment features. Eventually, the Daily News became one of the country’s top selling daily papers. In the early 21st century, it was locked in a circulation battle with its even more sensational rival, The New York Post.

In 1948 the Daily News established WPIX-TV, whose call letters were derived from its nickname of “New York’s picture newspaper.” The station continues to operate out of the former Daily News Building at 220 East 42nd Street near Second Avenue, an official city and national landmark designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building was also the model for the Daily Planet building in the first two Superman films.

After decades of declining revenue, the Daily News was bought out of bankruptcy by real estate developer and media mogul Mortimer B. Zuckerman in 1993, and later sold to Tribune Publishing (later Tronc) in 2017. Its renowned newsroom is still located at the company’s headquarters on 450 West 33rd Street (also known as Manhattan West), where a four-faced clock inscribed with the words “The Daily News” adorns the lobby.
