Automobiles and the Environment

Automobiles

The automobile is one of the most common forms of transportation in the world. Millions of people work in factories to produce these vehicles and many more work in the restaurants, gas stations, hotels and motels that travelers stop at on their way. But this popular form of transport can cause problems too. Many people die in car accidents every year, and cars pollute the air that we breathe. People want to drive to get where they need to go, so the number of cars is increasing all over the world. This can lead to traffic jams and road rage.

Invented in the late 1800s, the modern automobile is a four-wheeled vehicle that carries two to six passengers and a limited amount of cargo. It is powered by an internal combustion engine, which usually burns gasoline but can also use other fuels like diesel and electric power. The modern automobile is a complex machine with hundreds of systems that all work together to keep the vehicle moving. Some of the more important are the battery, ignition system, lubrication, cooling system and muffler.

A car has a steering wheel to help the driver control it, and a dashboard that shows you information like your speed and oil pressure. It is usually driven by a front-wheel or rear-wheel drive, although there are also all-wheel drive vehicles. Depending on the model, the engine may be water-cooled or air-cooled. Some models have a gas-powered generator that can provide electricity for the lights and other features. Other engines are powered by batteries or electricity, and some even run on steam.

Cars are now computerized, and there are even models that can drive themselves. Someday, all of them might run on hydrogen fuel cells, which are made up of small fuel-cell modules that produce power and heat from chemical reactions. These could reduce pollution and make the automobile a clean, green machine.

Automobiles are a huge part of the American economy. They have changed the way we live in America by providing more freedom and allowing people to travel longer distances for recreation, business, shopping and other reasons. They have helped create jobs in industries that supply parts and fuel for the cars, such as petroleum and gasoline and rubber, and they have made it easier to move around cities by providing more parking space and by facilitating the growth of suburbs.

Automobiles are a big part of people’s lives, and they have changed the world in many ways. Some of the changes are good and some of them are bad. For example, millions of people have died in car accidents. And cars pollute the air that we breath, and they can be a nuisance in the city. But the advantages of automobiles are great too. They allow us to get where we need to go and to be independent of public transportation. They give us the freedom to choose where we want to go, and they let us visit friends in far away places.
